Black Friday and Small Business Saturday at the Torpedo Factory AND MORE

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year!

There'll be traffic for coasting
patience for toasting
and digging out in the snow.
There'll be scary mall stories
And tales of the gories
of Christmases long long ago......

Maybe NOT the most wonderful time of the year? ;)

Everyone is over scheduled, financially extended and and just ready for the whole thing to be over. Even those that might not celebrate these year end holidays are effected by traffic jams and endless commercials for thoughtless, disposable gifts.

How does one DO the holidays differently? Of course, I suggest buying from local merchants, and especially handcrafted goodies. I have several events coming up that will help with these ends.

Black Friday, November 28

I *know* everyone loves a good deal! At least I know I do. So, this week, I will be hosting a very special, different kind of Black Friday. Yes, I will have sales (spring skirts and large purses 20% off) and door prizes (reach into a stocking a find out what your prize is) but I will also have an environment of good cheer and relaxation. Sip some wine, have a munch and pick out *thoughtful* gifts made by hand, crafted with recycled materials or just plain one of kind fun hats.

Pack of goodies from AMEX that I will be giving away!

Small Business Saturday, November 29

Started in 2010 by American Express, Small Business Saturday is a counterpoint to the traditional Black Friday at 'big box' stores. It has gained national and even international momentum as people push to support local, small business. In an urban, diverse area such as Washington DC, there is no end to small businesses to support.

Old Town Alexandria is home to dozens and dozens of locally owned businesses, such as boutiques, restaurants and bars. Personal services, such as salons and spas are also very common. And, when you visit the Torpedo Factory, each and every one of the artists selling their work is a small business owner.

For Small Business Saturday, I will be continuing the relaxed shopping atmosphere of Black Friday, but will also by giving away Small Business swag provided by Amex. Reusable bags, buttons and stickers to show support for the movement will be given away.

Likewise, in the spirit of community, I will be hosting a mini trunk show by talented ceramic artist  Marcel Artes Deolazo! Marcel is a talented ceramic artist and illustrator. He works in a bold graphic style of heavily textured line drawings that turn reality on their side. Meet Marcel from 3 to 6pm and select from tea cups, jewelry and illustrations. More on Marcel can be found at www.d-drawn.com

 Downtown Holiday Market

In its tenth year of festive vending, the Downtown Holiday Market just keeps getting better and better each time. I have had the privilege to participate each year, this one included. I will be in Space 56 from Friday, December 5 to Thursday, December 11. Right now, about a week and a half out, I'm working hard on hats, fingerless gloves and little bags. Hope to have a great stock to show you all!

The Market runs 26 days with over 150 vendors total. Local artisans goods, imported fine crafts, hand made chocolates and more abound. If you can't make it while I'm there, you should go *sometime* during those 26 days!

For more information, check out the Facebook event here or official website here.

Del Ray Holiday Market

An annual neighborhood tradition for many, the Del Ray Holiday Market was expanded several years ago to three weekends in December. There are different artists each weekend, so many people come to see each one. I will be selling the final weekend, December 19-21. This is a great chance to fill in the gaps on your shopping list. The wonderful thing about this show is the vendors donate a part of their sales back to the DRA, so when you support them, you support the organization.

A great way to keep up with all the events, shows, sales and more is to like my Facebook page. OR, follow me on Twitter. Or both. :) I try not to spam on email too much, so I leave it up to folks to find me too.

Last year, I wrote a post about thinking outside the (big) box for gift giving. While some of the dates might be incorrect for 2014, all the hints and tips are still good to keep in mind. Worth a read, if you are trying to break free from the mall.

Are you tired of reading all that? I'm tired having written it all, now I have to go live it! :D Afterward, I'm looking forward to going to NY to see my family for the holiday and eating many cookies. Especially while sitting in comfy pjs in the middle of the day. What about you? What are you looking forward to?

Happiest of holidays to your and yours ~Jen
